If you have an idea in mind for something you want to create, then the first thing to think about is scale. That’s mostly due to it being slightly more difficult to edit an existing static image convincingly. It’s worth noting this guide will mostly refer to creating a new location such as an island from scratch, rather than trying to edit or extend part of the current world map. Also starting small in order to keep things realistic would be beneficial I wouldn't approach your first attempt by trying to design an entire continent in one go for example. Think of things like the purpose of the location, what type of content would inhabit it, the theme & more.
